How to Extract Frames from a video using KMPlayer

Extracting frames or screen capping is often done in order to make animated pictures called GIFs. One major advantage of following this method is that it gives you full control of what your GIF would look like and how many frames you want in your animated picture. Whatever your reason is, this short how to will tell you how to automatically extract frames (screen caps) from your favorite scene from a movie file using the free KMPlayer.

  • Open your video and go to the part (point) that you want to extract the frames of in order to make a gif out of those frames. You should keep in mind that the larger the number of frames, the bigger would be the file size of your GIF. So try and make them as small in terms of number as possible. If you are using the video from your DVD, make sure that all the settings are at their default before you continue with it. Just press F2 to go to the settings and click on DVD under General Settings. Make sure that everything looks like the screenshot below. (Click to enlarge.)

DVD Settings

  • Next, you’d want to tweak your frame extraction settings. For that, right click anywhere in the KMPlayer go to  Options > Advanced Menu.

Advanced Menu

  • Once the Advanced Menu is active, you can now right click on the KMPlayer and choose Capture > Frame Extract: dialog. Shortcut key for that is Ctrl+G

Frame Extract Goto

  • Make the settings as per your requirements. Follow the screenshot settings if you don’t know anything about these settings.

Extract to: Path to the directory where the extracted frames (screen caps) will go. By default its in your Documents Folder under KMPlayer. (C:\Users\Webscopia\Documents\The KMPlayer\Capture\)

Image format: Bitmaps are fast but they loose quality, you can tweak your GIF after you finalize the settings, so we’d suggest that you should go with the PNG format.

Numbers to extract: This is for a continuous or a random screen cap.

Frames to extract: Extract less frames for a lower size of a GIF. 4 to 5 is a good setting. Greater frequency results in a bigger sized GIF but a lower frequency would result in a less continuous picture.

Size to Extract: Extract the original size, as you can resize the images later in any of your favorite image editing program.

Frame Extraction Dialog

  • That’s it, click on the Start button to start extraction and play the video. Once you’re done with the extraction, click on pause/stop and your screecaps will be saved in the folder you mentioned in the settings.

Here is the Mac Alternative to KMPlayer for extracting frames from a video. Just use the above settings in it and it will extract the frames in the same way as the KMPlayer does in Windows.

Useful Tips and Tricks with a WebCam

Almost every computer is now supported with a built-in web cam. Even if not then web cams are easily available at fairly cheap rates. With the blogging and making personal web sites on the heights these days adding the sites such as Flickr and Youtube, we are too much into taking our snapshots and recording our videos since not everyone has got a camcorder. This post is dedicated to give you some useful tips and tricks with using a web cam.

In this post we’ll focus more on useful tips and tricks of web cam while recording a video since taking snapshots is fairly simple. Just sit in front of it, set the lighting and tada. With video recording you need to know the tips and tricks not only about the light settings, but also the focus, audio settings, etc

Let’s try to learn some basic but very useful tips and tricks to use a web cam and get better result. Things you need to care about:

Lighting and Shades:

Lighting is very essential in photography or recording; let it be done with a DSLR or a web cam. You need to especially care about light settings when you’re using a web cam since web cam is not able to capture video in low light conditions and with snapshots too In low lights it gives very pixilated results. Try to avoid direct light though; this will cause the video or photos to be overexposed. Either go for indirect lighting by aiming the lights at a wall or cover the light with a diffuser.

Focus:

Web cams have no such focus lens capability. You should always try to avoid moving a lot during recording a video. Sit in front of it, settle yourself down and start the recording to let it properly focus on you. During the recording do not stand up or move around. Start the video and give few moments before you start speaking up, you can cut the first part of video with any editing tool.

Microphones:

Another useful tip to avoid the sound distortions is to never use microphones attached with the web cams (if your web cam has pre-built microphones) as these are of very poor quality. Try to only use dedicated microphones while recording.

Background:

Like the plain old rule of photography when they started using a dark blue shade as the background, with web cams too you need to play with the same old but useful trick. If you cannot have a darker background and like are sitting in front of a window then try to lighten the foreground with lights so that it gets bit balanced.

Apart from these few useful tips and tricks to use web cam, you must also be careful about the placement of the web cam. The best option is to put it in such a position that the cam is in direct line of your eyes as it is developed to catch your face. So next time when you record video for your Youtube makeup channel or just want to record something for your blog, just follow these preliminary but very useful tips and tricks and stop cussing about not having a good camcorder (to be sincere, web cams cannot replace them, ah!).

Awesome Kinect Created Music Video

A previous post covered how the Microsoft Xbox 360 Kinect is being hacked by innovators. This has opened up many avenues for the use of this motion sensor in different fields like education, technology, etc. Another one of the awesome examples of the Kinect being used to enrich experiences is this music video.

Music video for Catalina, a track off the Chocolat EP by Moullinex, released in January on Gomma Records.

The Get a Mac Campaign and Apple’s Victory

It isn’t surprising to know that Apple is one of the most innovative companies in the world. They have established a great name for themselves in every way. Steve Jobs is one of the most well known CEOs in the world and has been a fixture at all the main Apple events where he often announces the launch of a product.

Apple has innovated in every way and  is not afraid to use good bold designs to get closer to its goal. Only a fool would not think that an Apple device is not the ultimate brand. Apple  has great products which are not only beautiful and work well but they are also well marketed.

Apple is the only company  out there which gets a lot of buzz before they launch a product. The buzz is good enough to get people interested in buying their  products, getting them to buy from them over and over again. They don’t even need to push them too much as they know that people will be interested in buying an Apple product.
It is important to remember that Apple cares a lot about the design of its product and the way they are presented. One will never find a mediocre Apple product as the word does not exist in their dictionary. I have yet to see one Apple product which is ugly as they are all so well designed and pretty. Their presentation, their design, their packaging and even the way they are promoted via ads on TV and the print media is truly really out of the world. It reminds me of the time when Ridley Scott came up with the famous Ad in 1984 which was only aired once. It was made for $750,000 and worked so well that it made a lot of money for Apple. There is nothing tacky about them as it’s all very classy. This is one reason why people desire Apple products as they look really better than their competition. Even if they are priced cheaper people will still opt for Apple.

Get A Mac Campaign

Apple really made it’s way back to the top with its iPod. This was followed by one of their most successful marketing campaigns “Get a Mac”. The  “Get A Mac” campaign was famed for featuring the, then, unknown Justin Long.

The Get a Mac campaign was wildly successful mainly because it managed to successfully send out the message that PCs were unstable, prone to malware and virus attacks while Macs were safer, stable, easy to use and easier to switch to. It was a well known fact that PCs were never so great but this campaign let everyone know that they had better options.

It has been known as one of their most successful campaigns to date which may or may not have been influenced by the iPod’s Halo effect. The “Get a Mac” campaign worked as it grabbed the attention of  those who weren’t sure of what choices they had when it came to computers. The ads were light and witty  but managed to get its point by poking fun at the PC in its own way without being overtly mean.

Here is a collection of the ads if you want to see.

It surely got people thinking and let them see in many ways that the Mac was a far better option than a PC. The Macs are known to cater to a niche market but this campaign helped them to get a good share in the market even though the PC still has a huge majority. There were some publications which believed this campaign was a bit mean spirited and they did not mince any words.

The campaign also let consumers know that the PC was too bloated and was not a good option for seamless work i.e. editing, designing etc. In short the PC is not exactly the best for Designers.

The ad campaign also let consumers know that the PC was aggressive compared to the Mac’s Friendliness . Apple hit the nail on the head with this  campaign as they managed to touch upon the issue of empathy.

The campaign helped Apple promote itself by marketing itself as a  humble brand. They did not claim that they were the only good brand out there and showed that there was plenty of room for both the PC and Mac to work it out in the marketplace. The point which they made was that there were certain things the PC was good at and certain things the Mac was good at. This affirmed that both the PC and Mac were equal. It certainly won a lot of new fans mainly because of the fact that it did not promote itself in such an arrogant manner by being humble, trustworthy and credible.

Apple did something really different when they came up with this campaign. They made the characters of the ad very likeable and funny. They believed that if they were to be more approachable, friendly and witty in their ads they would be attracting more people to their brand instead of turning them off. The more people saw a human side to them the more they liked it as they were able to relate to it. The fact that these ads were good natured fun (Even if they tended to get a bit mean in an indirect way) and gave plenty for people to talk about. This was one reason why this campaign was talked about for a very long time even after Apple ended the campaign.

Another reason why Apple was successful on this front was because they managed to capitalize on the prejudices associated with the PC and Mac. Their ads stated that PCs were used by nerds and Macs were only used by uber-cool guys. Despite the fact that it was not exactly true, Apple still managed to send out the image that they were the cool ones and that using a Mac was way cooler than using a PC. This message was to have a really indirect effect on how people perceived themselves as Mac Users.

It has been mentioned earlier that the GAM campaign was quite successful. It ran from summer 2006 to earlier this year in 2010. The campaign did so well that Apple came up with many ads to keep people happy. It had a major effect on its sales as they showed a double digit growth and managed to sell over 1.3 Million Macs over the quarter from when the first ads came out. This marked a whopping 12 percent increase over the last year. The GAM campaign was partially responsible for Apple Sales to go up 39 percent for the fiscal year which ended in September 2006.It should be noted that the campaign was launched only 4 months before the fiscal year ended.

The Get a Mac campaign drew a lot from the success of the iPod. They would have never gone through with it had it not been for the success of the iPod which led it to experiment with their way of getting back at its competitors.

Apple has had many other successes with products such as the iPhone and iPad. They may have had products such as Apple TV which didn’t do so well but then their track record is overall really good. Miro Video Player – An Open-Source, 100% Free, Kick-Ass Player

We all have our favorite video player. I had mine too, VLC (emphasis on had). That is until I stumbled upon Miro Video Player. Video players grow on you, as VLC did, so changing it demanded there be good enough reason for it. Sure enough, Miro gives you all the reasons to switch.

Miro Video Player

Website: http://www.getmiro.com/

Straight out, Miro video player is 100% free. It is great for playing HD videos.

Then comes the aesthetics or the User Interface. This is a well-balanced interface. Not too shabby as the VLC interface (which is at the bottom of the barrel if you ask me), and not too bloated like the Windows Media Player, lots of functionality, but too ‘overdone’. The complete features set can be read here.

The Miro looks just nice, be it on a Mac or Windows, the interface is pragmatic and functional at the same time graphically speaking, it looks good. It’s a mix of iTunes and other flash based video players.

First question (that is usually asked), will it play MKV? The answer is yes! It will. Format wars don’t apply to Miro, it will play MPEG, Quicktime, AVI, H.\264, Divx, Windows Media, Flash Video, and almost every other major video format.

Organizing videos is a breeze. With a superb playlist, library, channel and playlist folders and even thumbnail creation for videos, the folks at Miro have thought of it all. Smooth drag-and-drop for easy video sorting and adding.

Miro can also download individual BitTorrent files and torrents that are in the feeds. Downloaded torrents automatically show up in your play list. It even has simple disk management, to ensure you never exceed the allotted space on your drive.

You can even share/publish your videos and post your videos to social sites like Digg, Reddit, del.icio.us and Video Bomb. Search millions of video sources, especially YouTube and be able to download HD YouTube videos directly from the Miro player. How cool is that?

As with any good software, Miro comes with a comprehensive support area and an active blog.

True to its open-source nature, Miro video player is available for OS X, Windows, Ubuntu and other Linux distros.

Here are some screenshots I took from my own PC – untouched. The quality of the playback is superb. Very good color handling and smooth video delivery.

How to Use Viral Marketing to Promote your business- Part 2 Elements of Viral Content

Continuing from Part One of our “Using Viral Marketing to Promote your Business” series, here is part two. We talk about the elements that can make your content go viral.

Elements of Viral Content

In the world of viral marketing, content- books, websites, videos etc- is only as good as the number of people it reaches. The chances of your particular content reaching more people are enhanced each time it is shared by someone. So, what should you do to make your viral marketing campaign a success? All the ads, ideas, videos or books that became popular had some elements in common. These elements are vital when it comes to persuading people to share your content with their social circle.

  • Create Emotion:

Viral marketing-create emotion

Keeping in mind that people are the most important medium of making anything popular, you need to create content that will appeal to them. Think of the last time you shared something on Facebook or twitter. Why did you share it? Did it appeal to you emotionally? Did you find that it was something really funny or interesting that your friends would like? When we share something (if we aren’t one of those who share everything and eventually get blocked by family and friends), it’s because it attracted us emotionally and made us smile, or sad or laugh out loud. According to the Harvard School of Health Science, people usually take “two seconds” to make a first impression about someone or something. This means, you have only a couple of seconds to make that first impression which will compel them to make the decision to share your message. Eighty percent of the time, people make decisions based on emotional intelligence rather than rational thinking. This means, appealing to the emotions is important when it comes to making your content viral. Scare them, jolt them, surprise them, terrify them or just plain tickle them and rest assured that the first thing they will do when they recover their senses is hit the share button.

  • Relevant:

No one will share anything that is not relevant to his or her situation or needs. All it takes is the abovementioned two seconds for your content to make someone go “Oh!” and click that “share” button. On the other hand, something that makes them ask, “So what?” or leaves the viewer/reader blank, will definitely not be shared. Give people what they need, not what YOU think they should need. Companies, be they old established ones or new start ups, can fail when they stop paying attention to what the consumer needs. When you no longer provide the user with what he needs, he will no longer be willing to tell his friend about the great experience he had with you.

The idea you are presenting to your consumers/readers should be important to them, not to the creator or company. Your product or service may be very important to you, but to the consumer or reader, it is the story that matters. Making ads that are centered on the product does not work for the user. They want to see/hear something interesting to them, not to you. Everyone remembers the Sony Bravia Ads, not because the Bravia is a great brand, but because the advert was amazing.

  • Fresh:

Make sure your content is something that is constantly updated according to the needs of the people. Viral marketing is not just a strategy; it is also about constant development, improvement and learning from your customer. No one is interested in stale information that has already been presented to the consumer a thousand times. Repackaging an old product to look new is not the only change needed. You also have to make improvements and changes to the product within. For instance, everyone already knows who Hitler was and what he did and if your next article or video is a repetition of the facts, hardly anyone will be interested. On the other hand, if your article presents a new take on the man’s sexual orientation, it will make people go, “Really?” and hit the share button.

Moreover, people like to share new things. It makes them seem knowledgeable and smart to their friends and followers thus satisfying a basic egoistical need.

Friend one: “Rabab always shares the latest news, she knows everything!”
Friend two: “Whatever.”

Well, alright, maybe not quite, but that’s how I would like people to think about me, wouldn’t you?

  • Useful:

Content that is pointless and was created without a specific aim in mind will end up losing more than gaining any followers. If your content- be it a book, an article, a product or a website- fails to answer any questions that the reader may have in mind, your content has failed, your viral hook has failed and you have lost a potentially good customer/viewer. Your campaign must be based on the principle of providing users with something that will answer a question, give them a reason to come back and generate a conversation that does not die out.

  • Informational:

If you come across a news story shared by a friend that talks about the latest update to the Xbox or the Play Station, would you share it? If gaming consoles and gaming are among your interests you definitely would share it if the article is good. Yes, it is not only important to convince people to visit your website or blog, it is also important to have material that will encourage them to share it with their friends. No one likes to look like an idiot for sharing something that was totally nonsensical. Right?

  • Create Trust:

Your customers or readers should be able to trust you to provide quality consistently. Ads or videos that shoot up the charts once and are unable to live up to the same level of excellence, do not promote trust. Your marketing needs to be linked to the provision of relevant, useful and innovative content, thus building trust and encouraging the sharing of your content.

  • Informational Cascade:

In economics, the term informational cascade is used to describe the effect of one person’s actions on others. For instance, let’s say you walk into a shop intending to buy a new pencil. Out of the two choices available, you see a person holding pencil A. You think, “He must know something about its superiority over Pencil B” and decide to try out Pencil A. Another person who comes in, sees the two of you, both holding Pencil A and thinks, “This must be a good brand because both of them are buying it” and gets into line with his Pencil A. As people keep coming in, they are influenced by the growing line of buyers for Pencil A thus creating an informational cascade that takes almost everyone along its current.

Your aim is to begin that cascade by identifying the influential people who lead the information cascade. These will be people who are known for their sharp eye on news, latest fashions, stores and products. They may not always be willing to share what you create so you have to persuade them to do so with the sheer allure of your content. Creating content that will make these influencers share it with their followers will help your campaign in its going viral aims. Thus, more and more people would want to give your product, service or website a chance.

  • Easy:

If you come across a website that has some very interesting news that you would like to share with friends and it does not have any buttons that make it convenient, chances are, you won’t share it. Making it easy for users to share your content through easily accessible buttons, links etc is essential. Making people go through long processes for sharing a small video is bound to turn people off and thus not share your meticulously created material. Something can only go viral if it is easy to share with the click of a single button. Incorporating links to Facebook, Stumbleupon and other social networks will not only make the sharing convenient but also remind them to share something that their friends might enjoy.

Another aspect of content that can go viral is the genre of that particular material. For example, videos, pictures and posters are easier to share than other forms of marketing. The viral element need to be built into your content making it easier for users to spread it.

  • Call to Action:

No marketing campaign can be successful if it does not involve a call to some kind of action. If you spend months designing a video that tells an old tale in a funny way, but have not asked the viewer to do anything specific, how long do you think your video will remain in the spotlight? The same time as a shooting star remains in the sky. People may share it and it may go viral, but has it helped you to sell what you wanted to? Has it made your brand popular? Have people begun to trust you for your quality or efficiency? If the answer is no, you have clearly failed to understand the basic concept behind it all.

Ask people to comment, to answer a question, take part in a competition or share their experience. For example, according to a study, tweets that ask to be retweeted receive more retweets than those that do not. People tend to like being asked to something because it adds a sense of ownership, a feeling of being a part of something larger and a general increase in their self-esteem when they think they have helped someone. It might sound very calculating, but that’s what marketing strategies are all about. You need to know which string to pull in order to get the required reaction.

Part One: What is Viral Marketing
Part Three: Putting your Campaign to Work

How to Use Viral Marketing to Promote your business- Part 1

Viral marketing is not a new phenomenon. It has been part of the marketing strategies of many well-known brands. Also used by lesser-known brands, viral marketing has helped them spread the word about their presence. So, what is viral marketing and how will it help you to promote your business, book, brand or product? Follow our three part series to learn how to use viral marketing to promote your business or brand.

What is Viral Marketing?

Do you remember the Old Spice commercial that almost everyone was sharing on Facebook?  Currently at 24,055,882 views, 93,525 likes and 30,135 comments on Youtube, this television commercial went viral big time.

Everyone loves sharing things through different social networks and each time you click “share” on Facebook or Stumbleupon, you are part of a much larger community of internet users than just your immediate circle. You are actually helping to spread the message to, not only your friends and followers but to the friends and followers of each of the people on your contact list. Therefore, making it go viral.

What is viral marketing? People like Brian Solis believe, “There is no such thing as viral marketing.” He is right in his conclusion because viral marketing is not only about creating content but also about the people who make that content go viral. I believe it is the term “Viral Marketing” that he has a problem with but until we find a better alternative, we are stuck with it.

Then again, experts, such as the great Seth Godin, not only believe in the power of viral marketing but have also written about the subject in a wonderfully concise manner. Seth not only coined the term, but at the same time, he managed to make his book go viral without ever intending to do so. You can download his popular book called Idea Virus (PDF) and see what he has to say about the viral marketing strategy.

More than ten years after his book was released, the world has changed immensely. Thousands may still download the book every month, but we need something that tells more about how to do it right than just telling us what is wrong. Today, the world of viral marketing has forgotten what it really means and what they need to do. Making silly videos that are, no doubt, shared by thousands among their friends, is not the only objective of a viral marketing campaign. The brand or company behind it all is forgotten. Spreading a funny video does not promote the name of your brand or business until you aimed for it do so and planned accordingly.

Viral Marketing VS Word-of-mouth:

Viral marketing is a combination of strategies that are focused around marketing techniques similar to word-of-mouth (WOM). However, it should not be confused with WOM because it utilizes much more than the short lived verbal word. WOM not only dies out quickly, it is also changes and modifies proportionally to the number of people who pass it on. This could mean a diminishing in the strength of your content or even, in many instances, a negative modification as more people tell others about it using their own perception of what they heard. Secondly, WOM also stands below viral marketing due to the fact that it takes a certain amount of effort to convey your idea to another person.
