iPhone 4S: To Buy or Not to Buy

Introduction:

So it has been finally made public-the new iPhone shall now be known as the iPhone 4S; not iPhone 5 (Great to know for the neutral perhaps, but not so good for those waiting eagerly for a grand appearance of the iPhone 5). Yes, it is disappointing to know the truth, but hold on-why is it? Before we even hint at trying to sympathise with the die-hard, Mr. MoneyBags over this one, do you mind explaining why the release of the iPhone 4S before an iPhone 5 bothers you so much? Alright, Apple did try to pull the same stunt as it did following the release of the iPhone 3G but let us all be a bit fair here. The refreshed model of the iPhone 4 is not that bad afterall-yes, you call that an understatement if you like (How generous, no?).

On a more serious note, after the passing away of Steve Jobs, we all know now why Apple refrained from introducing a new phone. Respect.

iPhone 4S Specs

A brief overview of the specifications of the new iPhone 4S suggests that it comes equipped with a 1 GHz dual core processor, a decent 8 Mega Pixel snapper, various software updates and of course, the new iOS 5. In my opinion, the question as to whether the phone is really worth spending a pretty penny on is an obvious one: of course! No, I am not a part of the Apple fan club, nor do I have any interest involved in supporting Apple products, unnecessarily.

Retaining the same screen size is perhaps one of the many let-downs of the new iPhone device. But it is funny how people are always critical of Apple’s creations and especially how rumours spread like lightning and then go down like mosquitoes all too soon. At the end of the day, the discussion at hand is, whether or not to upgrade to an iPhone 4S.

iPhone 4S

Personally, if I were an iPhone owner at this point of time, I would really have tried to resist the temptation of upgrading to the new iPhone 4S (Would not have been tough since I am not Mr. MoneyBags unlike most iPhone users). As far as the significant changes that have been made to the iPhone are concerned, there are quite a few to note. The new iPhone 4S costs $199 (16GB), $299 (32GB) and $399 (64GB) compared to a seemingly stooped price tag of $99 for the iPhone 4 (8GB). The 8 Mega Pixels snapper with f/2.4 aperture is a great improvement over the iPhone 4′s 5 megapixel AF with flash.

Of course, the processor is two times faster this time on the iPhone 4S with Dual-core Apple A5 against the iPhone 4′s A4. Enhanced HD video recording at 1080p with iPhone 4S is yet another remarkable change.

You should go for the iPhone 4S only in case:

  • You think you can not live without the latest Apple device.
  • You own an iPhone other than the iPhone 4, or none at all.
  • You fancy HD video recording on at 1080p resolution with an 8 Mega Pixels camera.
  • You have restlessly waited to try your hands on Siri, the app.
  • You ooze with money, here there and everywhere.

You should not go for the iPhone 4S in case:

  • You own the iPhone 4.
  • You expect a brand new design from your new phone.
  • You already have a phone that you are able to show off without an itch.
  • You want an affordably priced-phone with a decent amount of functionalities.
  • Your hard-earned cash matters alot to you and you are not a spoilt brat.

Microsoft Applications to be Ported to Symbian Phones

Overview:

We have certainly heard of video games being ported to next-gen gaming consoles but the news of some free Microsoft applications making a mark on Nokia’s Symbian phones has caught us with surprise for sure.Nokia hopes to give these applications home following a release of a flurry of updates (three in total to be exact) in the fourth quarter of the year. It is important to note; however, that these updates will be made available for only those who own Symbian phones that run Symbian Belle (the newest version of the Symbian OS).

The First Wave of Applications/Updates:

The very first round of mobile applications and updates to roll is has been scheduled for this year. Yes, that’s all. Let us simply move on to the first round of updates whose release is expected in year 2011.

Microsoft OneNote

This one is an avid application that brings allows taking notes on the go and synchronization of notes is also made possible with the SkyDrive online storage service.

Microsoft Lync 2010 Mobile

This cream of an application promises to offer easy-to-use instant messaging services along with web-based meetings.

Microsoft Document Connection

This one will make your day if you are office-going and have to view various e-mail attachments  and documents stored on mobile devices and on SharePoint 2010 sites.

Microsoft Powerpoint Broadcast

This application brings your Powerpoint presentations from PC directly to your mobile devices.

The Second and Third Wave of Applications/Updates

Both, the second and third rounds of applications and updates has been scheduled for the next year. While the second wave of applications and updates is slated for early 2012, the release date of the third round of the package has not been mentioned yet. However, Microsoft and Microsoft Excel will surely be added as native applications in the upcoming second wave, come the first quarter of year 2012.

Quote/Unquote:

It is worth mentioning here that Stephen Elop, the CEO of Nokia announced that Nokia will continue to invest in Symbian OS until 2016, despite the company making inroads into the Windows Phone OS.

Nokia’s official web blog also confirmed that, ”These updates are yet another confirmation that Nokia has not done making investments and introducing innovation into the Symbian platform.”

It further adds, ”There will be more updates in 2012 and more devices to come…Symbian is hugely important to our future ambitions and this latest announcement is just another example of the role that Symbian will play.”

Top Five Upcoming Phones for this Fall

Overview:

So you’re looking to buy a new cellular phone for yourself (maybe even your girlfriend or boyfriend), eh? Well, what if we told you to hold your horses for some more time and resist the temptation of letting loose the weight on your pockets (not too hard a task unless you are a spoilt brat). Nevertheless, with 4G made use of by a number of carriers and manufacturers, a wide variety of some of the most promising phones has been announced. To be honest, there is quite a LOT lined up ranging from Ice Cream Sandwiches (Android 4.0) to Mangoes (Microsoft Windows 7 Phone) [life certainly seemed to be a lot simpler when Apples, Mangoes and Ice Creams were only just eatables]. We, therefore, bring you this special edition on the five upcoming phones releasing later this year, hence we invite you to read on.

1. Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

Quite similar to how Samsung has been playing its cards immaculately well, Sony Ericsson has not done too bad at all this year; infact, it turns out that almost all Sony Ericsson Xperia phones released in the recent past enjoyed a great response from all and sundry. Following Sony’s relatively older announcement that was based around the idea of updating all the latest Sony Ericsson Xperia phones to Android 2.3.4 that brought with itself a world of goodies. Now comes the genuinely awesome part: earlier today, Sony decided to go an extra mile and confirmed that all the Xperia phones will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. With all these latest developments, Sony’s recently announced Android OS v2.3 (Gingerbread) phone, Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S, seems to be stepping in the limelight at a steady pace. Expected in the final quarter of 2011, Xperia Arc S is an 8 Megapixels auto focus snapper with LED flash that is expected to come equipped with a 4.2 inches LED-backlit scratch resistant  LCD. The 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor, Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine and more importantly and the new Honeycomb OS version (Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich) will certainly beef up this peach of a device (if all goes well and Sony doesn’t try anything ‘cocky’ that is).

P.S: The newly announced OS (Ice Cream Sandwich) is said to include various NFC options, Xbox Kinect-like feature called Virtual Camera Operator, USB hub support, and so on.

2. Nokia N9

The Nokia N8 had its fair share of praise and criticism following its release. The Nokia N9 starts off from where the Nokia N8 left and dons a premium-quality hard plastic finish (something that most people would not mind too much, we suspect). The magnificent 3.9 inches AMOLED display will be the main attraction for Nokia N9, besides the foremost significant factor of bringing the all-new MeeGo OS, v1.2 Harmattan to this very device for the very first time. The new user interface looks and performs well and we can safely assume that a leap of faith from Maemo to a new OS possibly could not have been bigger. User-friendly and fluid within itself, the new MeeGo OS promises to offer good support to the Nokia N9 device. It is a little too early to comment on applications and certain other goodies for the phone until its release but there are a few noticeable ones that are worth mentioning here. The gorgeous AMOLED display coupled with 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU will allow for some fluid web browsing experience for sure. Some great names like Angry Birds Magic (NFC), Galaxy on Fire 2 and Real Golf 2011 have already been announced for MeeGo OS; hence, it would be interesting to see how all of this unfolds as the release date of Nokia N9 draws nearer and nearer.

3. Samsung Galaxy Note

Whatever Samsung does these days, it seems to do pretty well. Like an Osain Bolt in a 200-metre marathon race, Samsung is playing the part of a pace-setter, magnificently well. With some handsome inductions like 4G and Super AMOLED Plus screen technology, the latest Samsung handsets never really failed to impress. Following the success of the recently released Galaxy S series, Samsung Galaxy Note is right around the corner. As expected, the phone promises high quality presentation and performance as this beauty is said to don a 5.3 inches Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, an 8 Megapixels autofocus camera with LED flash and 2Megapixels secondary camera, Android OS v2.3 (Gingerbread), Dual-core 1.4GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor and various other amenities that really make for a great all-round performer.

4. HTC Titan

As you would most probably acknowledge, HTC is renowned for infusing extra bit of style and design in its cellular phones than most manufacturers out there. Announced in August this year, the HTC Titan will come with a reasonably big (4.7 inches) S-LCD capacitive touchscreen and a powerful 1.5 GHz Scorpion processor, both of which will make viewing videos and browsing the web a boon. Like most new touchscreen phones, the phone will come with an 8 Megapixels autofocus camera with LED flash but the most significant bit about the phone is that it will be one of the first to home the all new Windows Phone 7 Mango OS. We are seriously hoping that HTC will not let us down and will not at all turn out to be a be a bad port for the new OS (afterall, all things in life require a grand beginning).

5. Motorola Pro

We genuinely believe there has been too much centre-stage offered to giant touchscreen hunks, which is why we decided to include a qwerty smartphone. Oh yes you got that right, Motorola Pro is the name of the game (not literally). Announced for late 2011, this 3.1 inch smartphone looks very promising with a nice and slick design and some ouch sensitive controls. The 5 Megapixels camera with dual LED flash and 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor certainly make the phone sound like a mini powerhouse. Designed for Android OS v2.2 (Froyo), Motorola Pro really does seem to be shaping up as a powerful competitor for its predecessors and other related phones of its stature.

Downgrade from iOS 4.3.4 to 4.3.3 and Verizon iOS 4.2.9 to 4.2.8

Apple just rolled out iOS 4.3.4 update for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. This update from Apple will most probably fix the JailbreakMe PDF vulnerability patch, and thus all those who rely on JailbreakMe should avoid to update to iOS 4.3.4. So, we have this tutorial about how to downgrade iOS 4.3.4 to 4.3.3 and Verizon iOS 4.2.9 to 4.2.8

Actually Apple has described the technical fixes already as:

Impact: Viewing a maliciously crafted PDF file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution

Description: A buffer overflow exists in FreeType’s handling of TrueType fonts. Viewing a maliciously crafted PDF file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

iOS 4.3.4 Software Update
Fixes security vulnerability associated with viewing malicious PDF files.

Direct Download Links for iOS 4.3.4 (Official from Apple)

I would repeat it here again that those who rely on Jailbreak should stay from iOS 4.3.4 especially iPad 2 users as they can lose their Jailbreak by updating to iOS 4.3.4. On the other hand, Apple also released an update of iOS 4.2.9 for Verizon iPhone users which offers the same changes.

In between all the hussle of iOS 5 Betas, I believe this update is no good, obviously. It was even said by Comex

Now indeed you might want to downgrade your iPhone from iOS 4.3.4 to iOS 4.3.3 and same for the Verizon iPhone users downgrading it from iOS 4.2.9 to iOS 4.2.8

NOTE: This guide will only work if you have shsh blobs saved for the particular firmware you are downgrading too.

Step 1: Download old iOS’s firmware to which you want to downgrade.

Step 2: If you are a Windows user, then navigate to the following folder “C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc”

OR if you are a mac OS X user, you can get to “/etc/” directory by going through “Go –> Go to Folder” from Finder.

Step 3: Look for the file name hosts and open it with Notepad in windows and mac users should look for TextEdit.

Step 4: Now add this following line at the bottom of the file. “74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com”

That’s it. Save this file and proceed.

Step 5: Get your iPhone, plug it in and lets put your iPhone into DFU mode.

  • Turn off your phone.
  • Now press Power button and as soon as you seen Apple Logo, press Home button while keeping pressed Power button too.
  • Keep holding down both button for about 10 seconds.
  • After 10 sec, release Power button but keep holding Home button until iTunes recognizes your iPhone. You should keep the PC volume high to hear New Device Detection sound.
  • Let go the Home button. At this point your iPhone screen should be blank (black in color).

Step 6: Here, iTunes will alert you that “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore it before it can be used.” Click okay

Step 7: Now, it time for us to restore the firmware – Hold down the “SHIFT” key (windows)/ “ALT”key (Mac) and click on “Restore

Step 8: Wait for the restore to finish and you will then have a sigh of relief.

If you face any bugs or errors, feel free to comment and we will help you out.

Editor’s Note: Some people have faced problems with error 1013 when they downgrade from ios 4.3 to 4.2.1. Here is a video, suggested by a reader, that will help you bypass that error.

Which Online Syncing Service is Right for you?

Dropbox is one the best file syncing services out there. It is quite convenient to use and has its own advantages. However, Dropbox is not the only file syncing service out there. There are plenty of alternative file syncing services which can do the job.  There are a number of file syncing services but not all of them are available on all platforms. SpiderOak, SugarSync, Wuala and Windows Live Mesh work with both PC and Mac. Linux users are limited SpiderOak, Dropbox and Wuala (no big surprise that Microsoft does not support its open-source rival.) The following file syncing services have the same features on all platforms, so it made sense to test it on my PC.

 Live Mesh

One of the leaders of the pack is Live Mesh, which  is Microsoft’s  foray into the file syncing market. It has a good brand name going in its favor but it can be a bit of a challenge to use. For starters you need to login with a Windows Live ID to download the software. They should have made the installation straight forward and easy. It also takes quite a bit of time and involves the installation of additional files. This can prove to be the deal breaker for those who want a swift setup without any complications. On the bright side Live Mesh users can get 5 GB of space on SkyDrive for local syncing. That’s a decent amount of space and is nearly twice the amount you get on Dropbox.

It is an ideal choice for Windows users who can sync their Internet Explorer and MS office settings and use them at other locations. Linux users are not as fortunate as there is no support for it nor does it have much support on major mobile operating systems. I haven’t had much of a problem using Live Mesh as it gives you the option of selecting which folders to sync instead of just sticking to one folder.  It is a neat file syncing system though without the relative ease of use of Dropbox. My only concern is that the data is not encrypted while they are on the server. They may claim that their servers are secure but there is no guarantee. It is better for them to start encrypting user data before there is a security breach and users lose confidence in the product.

 SugarSync

SugarSync could have been a DropBox killer but falls short because it lacks API support  and the ability to sync on the LAN. Alternatively, Dropbox has a lot of third party apps because it offers proper API support. It offers a free 5 GB account for starters, which is similar to the offering by Microsoft. It does hold its own against Dropbox by offering media streaming, mobile syncing (which means uploading photos and folders from Android devices) as well as selecting various folders and setting permissions. This added flexibility should make it more desirable for users. However this feature will be redundant in the long term as Google Plus is giving users options to instant upload their photos and videos on the Android (there also won’t be any storage limit). Apple’s iCloud service is poised to do the same thing though there is a limit to the storage. If you need more space, you can opt for the s 60, 100 and 250 GB option for $10, $15 and $25 dollars per month. The thing I like about SugarSync is that its web interface has more functionality and allows for editing of the apps. It also uses a smart filter to separate photos from files and also gives a more generous 500 MB per referral instead of a measly 100 MB offered by Dropbox. Overall this is a visually appealing, competent service which can hold its own against the other file syncing services.

Wuala

Wuala may sound like yet another file syncing service. The thing which sets it apart is the fact that it offers local encryption and syncing though they only offer 1 GB of storage space It is available on Windows, Mac, Linux as well as the iOS and Android platforms. One can also buy more storage but it is quite expensive as compared to other services. Wuala has a great folder management interface but then you still need to use your brains to come up with a folder management system to organize your files. The biggest advantage of Wuala is that all files are encrypted directly on your computer. The password stays within the computer and the provider is unable to access your files or password. It also helps that they use AES, RSA and SHA encryption technology for the files. As an alternative, this is useful for all those people who want to make sure their files are secure and are not comfortable using the likes of Dropbox or Live Mesh.

SpiderOak

SpiderOak is awesome because not only can you synch your mobile and desktop but you can also synch your external drive and Network drive. This is quite useful as other services don’t give you an  option to sync with your external drive or network. It also provides detailed information about all uploads, backups etc. the good thing about this service is that each referral nets you a 1 GB of space though the max you can get is 50 GB. SpiderOak also has a folder management system which is similar to Wuala.  My only problem with SpiderOak, as an alternative to dropbox,  is that their user interface can tend to be a bit confusing.  You have to backup your files separately and then choose the files you want to sync between devices. However, I wish they could have simplified it and made it as easy as DropBox. SpiderOak rates well for its privacy and security measures as all passwords and file information are unavailable to the company. It also has a two step authentication system which is the icing on the cake.  This should make it easier for people to trust them.

Conclusion

Overall all of these services are pretty good in their own way. One does not have to stick to Dropbox as they can avail any of these choices. I love the fact that I can rely on any of these services instead of sticking to Dropbox. Overall each service is unique in its own way and has its  own use. My personal choice is Dropbox but when it comes to security I prefer SpiderOak because of its two step verification system and the fact that my files will be safe.
