Sony PSP2 VS Nintendo 3DS: Which One Will You Buy?

The Next-Gen game war is about to heat up with the arrival of the Nintendo 3DS and Sony PSP2. This is  a continuation of the war between the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. It is a well known fact that the Nintendo DS easily beat the PSP in terms of Sales. The Nintendo DS was mocked for not being a powerful piece of hardware but still managed to find plenty of takers for its great library of innovative and addictive games. The PSP did not fare so well as it was more focused on gamers. Sony is facing competition from both Apple and Nintendo in the hand-held gaming market.

The Sony PSP2 is set to be unveiled in a grand ceremony on the 27th of January 2011. Sony has not revealed the specs of the PSP2 so far but it is rumored  to feature a high definition touchscreen, front and rear cameras, microphone  and 2 new Analog sticks with concave indentations. An internal source from Sony had earlier claimed that the USP of the PSP2 is that it will be powered by a chip which will be as powerful as the PS3 and will have around 1 GB of RAM.

Developers are currently working on titles for the PSP2 though no games have been announced so far. The PSP2 will be powerful enough to run HD Games. Games for the PSP2 will be available via physical media while  It will also support downloadable content such as games, apps.

The Nintendo 3DS will be the first to enter the new generation of hand-held gaming. It will be sold for $249 and with come with a Dock Charger as well as a 2 GB SD card. Nintendo is targeting casual gamers with the 3DS as they know that casual gamers are a bigger market than hard core gamers. The USP of the 3DS is that it will support 3D games without the need for 3D Glasses. The Nintendo 3DS will be available during the end of March in Europe and North America. It also has a good selection of titles available during the launch period such as Zelda, Nintendogs+cats as well as third party hits such as Street Fighter and Dead or Alive.

The Nintendo 3DS will feature a custom chip, will have 2 screens (like the previous DS and DSi), will weigh only 230 grams, support wi-fi and will feature anti-piracy methods to thwart modders. The 3DS will also feature 2 cameras (front and rear) and will also support 3D pictures. Gamers will also be able to download apps and digital games for the 3DS.

Even though the 3DS and PSP2 are catering to different sections of the market there will be only one victor in this war. My bet is on the Nintendo 3DS which will win out due to great support from publishers and the fact that the hardware is available for a reasonable cost. I am skeptical about the PSP2  as I believe that only hardcore gamers will opt for a Handheld unit which can play HD games. The other reason being the fact that a unit so powerful will consume battery life really fast. So let’s see if these predictions are accurate and if history repeats itself yet again.

Before I reply shobz, lets start off on a more friendly note - I really don't have any bone to pick with you, but you must try and understand my vested interest in a venture such as webscopia. This is the first blog/site of its nature that I have found that has its roots in Pakistan and I desperately want to see it succede, I'm sure so does Faisal and the site Editor who've put in countless hours in the site design and content. That said, my comments may seem very caustic, but that is only a fruit of the fact that I do not want to see webscopia turning into just another tech blog, I want it to be what the people investing their money, hosting space and creative efforts in it intend it to be, not just one writer's vision.

Now turning to the specifics, I never said I'd want to do a better job on the article, I've already given in my take on this, I'd - And I just got a mail from faisal essentialy limiting my ability to freely critique and am thus cutting the comment short. I must however say, despite faisal's mail, that since I am a student of logic and philosophy to a small extent, I'd just like to point out one small logical flaw in your comment. By belitteling both the hard editorial work and the personal investment that goes into webscopia in an attempt to defend your own work, you have not only in effect insulted the hard work and driving passion that has brought the site so far and that is supposed to carry it forward, you have in effect also belittled the essence and quality of your own work.

Just my two cents.

@Maheen: Unfortunately, I have spoiled my kids rotten. I will end up buying both of these gadgets for them! I am not a gadgets person per se, but my kids sure are. They will they will drown in the noise of the world, if they did not have these gadgets to keep them afloat!

Unfortunately I have been loyal to SONY since the 1st PlayStation came out (Destruction Derby was to die for), so I Side with the PSP2

If you think you can write a better post you can go ahead and do that :) on your own blog. I am the writer over here and I decide what I want to write. You also claim that my post is misleading. I don't see anything misleading about "Sony PSP2 vs Nintendo 3DS- Which one will you buy". They are both handheld gaming devices aren't they. I am sure you have already decided which device you are going to buy. However you do not belong to the category of people who have not decided what they want as yet. I believe maybe some people are aware of the brands but they don't have technical knowledge of the whole thing. It's not as if everyone is a born techie or as if they know everything about games or gadgets. The purpose of the post is to make it simple so that an average joe can understand. This post is not meant for a genius like you who loves to go and behave like a troll.
Furthermore these are just the facts written in my opinion. I can't go and invent the news can I. Please do try and understand that there is a big difference between "How To posts" and "News" posts. Since this is a blog and not some nifty tech magazine there is a big difference in editorial standards. Blogs are not meant to be edited but are more of a reflection of a person's personal work (hence the reason why they are called blogs and the reason why Webscopia is not some Techie Website or magazine). If i were to write for PC World or something they would have edited my post and turned it into something better. You do realize that they have editors for the job right. It's not as if writers magically come up with the right words. The editors shape them into something better.

I would beg to differ, you should if I must say so very humbly, reread the text of your article, two small sentences in a 550 word article reiterated the stance that you made so boldly in the comment. The rest of the article by all means and intents, and most prominently the title, tells a different story, gives a different impression to put it in other words. A massive overhaul is required if what you say in your comment is the purpose of the article.

Also people waiting on these devices most probably are already aware of their gaming preferences, the article seems like an oft done rehash and that is not what I expect from webscopia, least of all when its just spreading its wings. I expect articles like the centos article, the wp7 article, the viral marketing article and the intel amd article, not a rehash of what everyone and their grandmother on the blogosphere has done.

I think you haven't noticed the part where I mentioned that both these products cater to different sections of the market. It does however fall into the "Handheld" gaming section of the market. At the end of the day each device caters to a totally different market. However we all know that despite the massive differences it was Nintendo which won the lion's share of the handheld gaming market thanks to its innovative and addictive games. No matter how different these devices may be they will always be slotted against each other. The casual gaming market which went for the Nintendo Wii and are now going for the Kinect are the biggest market out there. Gamers will go for the PSP2 but in my opinion I doubt they will be able to compete with the Nintendo 3DS unless it turns out to suffer the fate of the Virtual Boy.

Another point is the fact that not everyone will be able to buy both devices. The post is merely talking about the availability of both devices in the year 2011. A comparison of both devices does not mean they are in the same category but merely a way of letting the ones who haven't decided to make up their minds.

Unfortunate as it is, I must say that this is one of the few unprofessional and uninformed posts that I have seen on webscopia - and I have followed the site since its inception. The 3DS and the PSP2 are not meant to be competing products and as such do not deserve a 3DS vs PSP2 article, and I thought that this issue had been buried a fw years back when tech bloggers and fanbois alike finally realised after constant rehashing that they were both disparate and distinct products.

Unfortunate things happen, what can I say.
